Nomading 2016: The Backpack

Introduction

I’ve always loved the idea of living out of a backpack. There’s something pretty amazing about having everything you need with you at all times (unless someone steals it, and then you’re screwed).

The Backpack:

First of all, I can’t one of my good friends Asa enough. You see, my day to day bag is a Granite Gear Kahiltna 29 (thanks Molly!) – a really awesome 29L day pack with lots of space, good organization, and a rain fly. It wasn’t enough space to live out of for a month, especially when, like me, you like to bring multiple sweaters for your different moods 😉. Asa let me borrow his 43L Kelty Flyway, and it’s awesome.

What’s in the backpack?

Take a look:

The only thing missing from this picture are the clothes I’m wearing right now, my iPhone 7, and the book Everything is Illuminated, that my friend Allie let me borrow. Everything total weighs 24lbs, so all I have to do to make the WOW Air 22lb limit is pull my laptop out and carry it with me haha.

Here’s the list, in case you’re curious what I’m packing. Thanks again to The Wirecutter‘s travel guide for the suggestions on some of this stuff:

Storage:

  • Kelty Flyway 43L
  • 2 WooCommerce Bagbags, from WordCamp Raleigh
  • Cables Baggie

  • 15″ MacBook Pro
  • iPhone 7 (I was gonna bring my SLR
  • RAVPower 16750 mAh power bank
  • Extension Cord
  • Universal Travel Adapter
  • IKEA Flexible USB LED Light
  • Jaybird X2 Bluetooth Workout Headphones
  • Samsung T3 Portable SSD (256GB)
  • Pebble Time Round Smartwatch
  • Sony MDR-7506 Studio Headphones
  • Lightning Cable/2x Micro-USB to USB Cable/Lightning to 1/8″ Dongle

Other Stuff:

  • Lever Gear 40+ function TSA-compliant wallet card thingy, with money clip. This was a kickstarter from a local company, and I don’t know what I’d do without it
  • Credit/Debit Cards

  • Soap/Shampoo/Body Wash/Comb
  • Deodorant/Razor/Toothbrush/Toothpaste/Bandaids
  • Nomader Collapsable Water Bottle
  • Packtowel Microfiber Towel (XL)

Clothes:

  • Chippewa Leather Boots (I really just need this one pair for everything)
  • Outdoor Research Down Jacket – seriously this thing is amazing, weighs nothing, and can pack up into the hood (as seen)
  • Carhartt Hipster Beenie
  • Other Half 5-panel – one of my favorite of our new clients – I love their artwork, and their insane IPAs, and this hat I got last time I was in Brooklyn visiting them
  • 2 Sweaters
  • 7 T-Shirts/1 Button-Up
  • 1 Pair of Jeans/I’m wearing the other
  • Dress Pants/Long Johns
  • 10 Pairs of Underwear (buy stuff good for travel, that one on top is the Stance Wholester and it’s freekin’ amazing trust me)
  • 10 Pairs of Socks, mostly SmartWool or Stance

Hope I didn’t forget anything 😜
